Serums - The Secret Skincare Weapon

Facial Serums: the skincare step that all beauty bloggers are into at the moment, the products that a lot of people pretend to know what they are ... but really have no idea. Today, I am going to help you understand what a serum really is and go over some of our most popular serums available at the clinic.

Are they a moisturiser? Sort of. Are they an oil? Sometimes. Do they have lots of magical ingredients that will transform your skin? ABSOLUTELY!

The main takeaway from this blog is that serums are amazing. They are an absolute staple in my skincare routine ... but it wasn’t always that way. For me, serums were an 'I-didn’t- know-I-needed-this-until-I-tried-it’ type of thing. But from my first serum I was hooked.

They are jam-packed with nutrients and offer major benefits to your skin. Simply put - they transform your skin more than any simple wash and moisturise routine could, because you can tailor-design and target your skins unique problems.

What is a serum?

Serums are highly concentrated concoctions with the intent of delivering powerful ingredients directly into the skin. Serums allow you to focus on a specific skin concern (e.g. wrinkles, acne, discolouration) and target that directly. Serums can penetrate deeply into the skin because their molecular size is very very small and deliver a very high concentration of active ingredients which makes them super effective. There is nothing diluted and weak about them. They are like a very powerful, very specific recipe made to target a skin issue and solve it.

Is a serum a moisturiser?

Yes and no. Serums can be oil-based and/or full of moisturising compounds ... it just depends on which on you get! Technically speaking, they can add moisture, however, are not substitutes for your moisturiser. Think of the serum as the powerful ingredient you want to go deep into your skin, and a good moisturiser can be used to create a barrier on top of the skin to keep all of that serum-y goodness in.

When should I apply a serum?

Serums should be applied after cleansing and toning (if you use a toner) but before your moisturiser (and SPF if in the morning) so they can deliver powerful ingredients directly into your skin and then be locked in with your moisturiser. Please note that sometimes less is more - serums are potent so 3-5 drops should be more than enough to cover your face and neck. However, it is always a good idea to check the manufacturers instructions for their suggestion for the use of their product.

But why are they so expensive?

I get it, serums are often much more pricey compared to other skincare items. But remember how I said they are jam-packed with compounds and nutrients that actually transform your skin? Yep, that explains the extra few pounds. Here’s how I think of it - spending money on my skin is not an expense, it’s an investment. I am certain that my future 60-year-old self will be thankful that I invested in a few serums. Also, if used correctly, serums will last a long time because only a few drops are used each time.

So now you know a little more about serums, let’s take a look at our most popular serums from our three top brands to see what they have to offer.

SkinCeuticals is a very serum-y brand so there are many to chose from. However, we do have a few that are very popular with not only clients but ourselves too.

C E Ferulic:

This is a daytime Vitamin C serum that provides you with advanced environmental protection and improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness and brightens the skins complexion, making it not only a Vitamin C serum but an anti-ageing one also. This is the perfect Vitamin C serum for individuals who are looking for anti-ageing benefits also. Suitable for dry, normal and sensitive skin as well as dehydrated, pigmented and ageing skin.

Phloretin CF:

This is also a daytime Vitamin C serum. Again, it provides you with advanced environmental protection and improves the appearance of fine lines and discolouration making it both a Vitamin C and an anti-ageing serum. Very similar to C E Ferulic, however, this is more suited to normal, oily and combination skin types as well as pigmented, acne and ageing skin.

Serum 10:

This is another Vitamin C serum to be used with your morning skincare routine. It offers the client advanced environmental protection (antioxidant). This is a Vitamin C serum more suited to the younger clients. Perfect for normal and sensitive skin types as well as clients who are having problems with acne.

H.A. Intensifier:

This is a hyaluronic acid serum. H.A. Intensifier is a multi-functional corrective serum to amplify the skin's hyaluronic acid levels. It can also be used to reduce the appearance of ‘crows feet’ for smoother and former skin and to deliver long lasting hydration in order to improve the skins texture. Suitable for all skin types, particularly dehydrated and ageing.

Hydrating B5:

This is another hyaluronic acid serum. It is an oil free hydrating serum used to replenish nutrients the skin needs to feel smooth and appear younger and restore radiance for a smoother complexion. This serum leaves this skin feeling supple and smooth and it also enhances the benefits of your daily moisturiser. Hydrating B5 is ideal for all skin types and conditions.

Phyto Corrective:

Another hyaluronic acid serum. This is a hydrating and soothing gel serum containing not only hyaluronic acid but cucumber and thyme, making it ideal to calm and hydrate the skin. It also improves redness. This is wonderful for all skin types and conditions, especially as it is non-comedongenic.

Discolouration Defence:

An anti-ageing serum specifically designed to target pigmentation. It is proven to reduce the appearance of key types of pigmentation including post-acne marks. Ideal for all skin types, particularly those who would like to target pigmentation issues.

Alumier is a wonderful brand with a wide range of serums and target treatment products. With Alumier, there really is something for everybody.

EverActive C&E:

Yes, another Vitamin C serum. However, this one is slightly different as it also contains Vitamin E which is highly moisturising and strengthens the effects of Vitamin C. This is an antioxidant serum to protect against the environment (e.g. pollution) and reduce the visible signs of ageing. This Vitamin C serum allows the Vitamin C to be kept separate in powder form in a unique cap and is only mixed into the bottle of serum when you are ready to use it. Although more expensive, EverActive C&E comes in a box of three bottles and will last you three months. Like all Vitamin C serums, this is for daytime use only and is suitable for all skin types.

Ultimate Boost Serum:

This is a lightweight, hydrating serum that combines moisturising and anti-ageing ingredients to reduce the visible signs of ageing, for all skin types. This serum also strengthens, firms and improves elasticity, protects the skin from free radicals from the sun and pollution and leaves the skin feeling soft, smooth, firm and hydrated.

A lightweight hydrating serum that calms and provides relief for sensitive skin and redness-prone skin. It calms redness and inflammation making it also perfect for clients with rosacea. It is enriched with products such as aloe and sea whip all known for their powerful soothing and anti-redness properties and also helps to replenish the skins natural protective barrier.

Guinot is our amazing French brand. Although they do not have a wide range of serums compared to the previous two brands, we do have a few client favourites for you.

Time Logic Age Serum Yeux:

Our first serum from Guinot is actually an eye product in serum form. It helps to repair the eye area at night and enhance brightness during the day. This products is a 30 night intensive treatment for the eye area, it is for evening use only and should be applied in the same way you apply your normal eye products. Ideal for clients showing advanced signs of ageing.

Serum Longue Vie:

This serum is a deeply effective anti-wrinkle treatment. It has an intense smoothing effect and improves cellular renewal. This can be used both morning and evening and is ideal for clients showing the early signs of ageing.

Time Logic Age Serum:

This serum can be used along side Time Logic Age Serum Yeux (they work better together). This stimulates cellular regeneration making the skin appear younger, smoother and firmer. Again this is a 30 night intensive treatment serum for the face and neck (therefore this serum is for night use only). Ideal for clients showing advanced signs of ageing.

Serum Bioxygene:

Perfect if you are looking for an introduction to serums. This serum restores radiance for beautiful, healthy skin and provides a refreshed appearance. It can be used both morning and evening and like all serums, should be used on both the face and neck. This is ideal for all skin types and conditions.
