Let's talk about Vitamin D
Every time you turn around, there is yet another news story about the importance of Vitamin D. The ‘sunshine vitamin’ has been shown to be beneficial for several health conditions including bone health, immune health, fertility and others. And as we all know, it is brilliant for healthy functioning, YOUNG skin.
So, what actually is Vitamin D? Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that functions to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus (a mineral found in cells and other tissues to aid growth and repair). Vitamin D enhances the absorption of calcium, thus helping to build and maintain strong bones. And that’s just the benefits to bone health! Studies have shown that women with healthy levels of Vitamin D have a higher success rate when it comes to fertility (that includes fertility treatments such as IVF), than those with low levels. Studies also show that Vitamin D helps to aid ones immunity levels, keeping us healthy.
So, where do we get the all important vitamin from? As said earlier, Vitamin D is also known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’, and for good reason! With enough sun exposure, our bodies can make all the Vitamin D we need which is quite clever! However, if not exposed to enough sunlight, you may not get enough Vitamin D. The same goes for those with underlying health conditions such as reduced liver/kidney function at their bodies have a harder time metabolising Vitamin D. The amount of Vitamin D produced in the body from sun exposure can vary depending on ones age, location, the time of day and the use of sunscreen. If the body does not produce enough Vitamin D due to these things, that is where Vitamin D supplements come in.
Healthy levels of Vitamin D are imperative during these unprecedented times. As stated earlier, Vitamin D is amazing for increasing ones levels of immunity. Latest research published in the Irish Medical Journal (aswell as other places) has shown that people with low levels of Vitamin D are at higher risk of acute respiratory tract infection and community acquired pneumonia. It has therefore been proposed that Vitamin D supplementation (in tablet or liquid form) may enhance resistance to COVID-19 infection, or limit it’s immunological damage and improve the condition for those who do become or are infected.
Hawkins Clinic has just the thing for you! We all know how amazing Skinade is and for those of you who are new to us, I will tell you all about it.
Skinade is a drink that supports the skin all over your body. It works from the inside out, hence the tag line “better skin from within”. It helps to rebuild and strengthen your collagen fibres below the skins surface, reduce fine lines and wrinkles and boost your natural levels of hydration. And then best part? It’s only 35 calories! The drink contains a large number of wonderful things including EIGHT types of Vitamin B, collagen peptides, Vitamin C and Omegas 3 and 6 as well as many more. Why a drink you may ask. Well if you were to try and take Skinades ingredients in tablet form, you would need to swallow around 20 large tablets per day. Not only is that extremely difficult but your body would actually only absorb around 30%-40% of this! A ‘collagen drink’ may sound horrible but I can assure you it has a lovely peachy flavour to it.
Our lovely scientists at Skinade are very smart and have developed a new formula to not only boost your levels of Vitamin D, but also your levels of Vitamin A! This wonderful new formula is in the Skinade Targeted Solutions range and is called Derma Defence. Again, Derma Defence is an internal skincare product that delivers its functional ingredients via a drinkable highly absorbable liquid sachet. Not only does it aid your skin in similar ways that your normal Skinade does, but it also provides more even looking skin, a reduction in pigmentation and gives the skin its much needed doses of Vitamins A and D as well as Calcium. Vitamin A has an anti-ageing function thanks to its antioxidant power that fights off free radicals. It increases moisture levels, contributes to normal skin function and normal cell replication. The Vitamin D helps with healthy functioning of skin aswell as aiding immunity and increasing bone health as it helps to transport the available Calcium to strengthen bones. Unlike your regular Skinade, Derma Defence has a natural mango and coconut flavour and contains fewer than 13 calories! Derma Defence is not taken daily like Skinade. It’s suggested usage is daily for 90 days then a two week break.
