Buildup a skincare routine

I have been stuck indoors for seven weeks now (and counting) and I am sure you will all agree with me when I say it is not the ideal situation to be in. I have had my good days and my bad days but having a skincare routine that personally works for me is what makes me feel better, not just on the outside, but the inside too.



Great skin is not simply a matter of DNA - unfortunately your daily habits, in fact, have a big impact on what you see in the mirror. Science behind skincare products has come a long way however, there is still no such thing as an instant fix - you need time to reap the benefits. Results are only seen through consistent use. Studies show that in order to notice a difference, a product should be used for at least 6 weeks, once or twice a day.


Cleansing:

Washing your face is the most basic and essential step of any routine. Our skin comes into contact with environmental pollutants, dirt and other factors each day and these should be gently removed. Cleanse your face twice a day (double cleanse if you have been wearing make-up) in the morning and the evening to avoid clogged pores, fullness and acne.

Different skin types require different types of cleansers. These could be cream, foaming, oil or micellar water aswell as other options. The type of cleanser you use would be based on your skin type and condition as well as your personal preference on things such as texture and smell. My favourite cleanser is SensiCalm by Alumier. I use it both morning and evening. It has a wonderful cream-like texture and is ideal for those with sensitive or redness prone skin like myself.


Toning:

The original toner was an alcohol-based product that was used to dry up oily skin and remove any left over dirt following cleansing. It sounds horrible, I know! Luckily for us, science has evolved. Toners can now provide and extra shot of nutrients while rebalancing the pH of your skin to re-build the acid mantle (the skins protective layer) following cleansing.

As lovely as a toner is, this is not seen as essential in a skincare routine. A tip for applying toner; you can apply a small amount with the palms of your hands to help save on product or if your skin is more sensitive you can apply a small amount to a cotton wool pad to help dilute the formula. I absolutely love Bright and Clear Solution from the Alumier range! I use this morning and evening and it is probably my favourite product. I love it so much because it have enzymes in it which work as a Pac-Man like mild exfoliation.


Treating:

Simply put, serums are powerful skin allies. Filled with concentrated doses of active ingredients, they can mitigate a number of issues from dark spots to wrinkles. Even if you don’t have any specific issues, everyone still needs a general antioxidant serum in the morning to protect from daily aggressors.


A top tip; don’t mix serums with moisturisers to apply. This will dilute the formula of the serum but also lessen its ability to absorb making it less effective. My favourite serum is Serum 10 by SkinCeuticals. It is an antioxidant vitamin C serum perfect for those this sensitive skin or the early signs of aging. I use this every morning before applying my moisturiser. For those without sensitive skin or with more advanced signs of aging, C E Ferulic by SkinCeuticals is the perfect antioxidant vitamin C serum for you. I also use retinol 0.5 by Alumier to help the resurfacing process of my skin. It is also brilliant for preventing and treating fine lines and wrinkles.


Moisturise:

The most basic function of a moisturiser is to hydrate and soften the skin. Everyone needs a moisturiser but texture will depend again on your skin type and condition aswell as personal preference. Different textures can include gel, cream, lotion or balm.

Due to lockdown, we are not getting enough of the vital oxygen our skin needs to maintain the health of its cells, so I have a MUST HAVE moisturiser for you during lockdown...Bioxygene by Guinot. It restores healthy radiance bu stimulating cellular oxygenisation with an ingredient called Pro-Oxygene. It also protects the skin from pollution. I like to use this moisturiser twice per day, once in the morning and once in the evening.


Protect:

Sunscreen is hands down the most crucial skincare product. It is of utmost importance as part of your year round regimen. Daily and consistent use of sunscreen helps to prevent the development of fine lines and wrinkles, textural imperfections and most importantly, it can help to prevent the formation of certain skin cancers.


Top tip; apply sunscreen every morning as your last product, thirty minutes before sun exposure and and reapply at least every two hours. My go to sunscreen in Sheer Hydration by Alumier. It contains vitamin E so is very moisturising and it creates a healthy sheer glow.
