What is Semi Permanent Make Up

Homepage > Articles > What is Semi Permanent Make Up

Semi-permanent cosmetic make-up can normally be applied to eyebrows, top eyeliner, bottom eyeliner, lip liner and full lip colour.  It is a simple procedure of implanting colour into the skin - borrowing a technique from tattooing.  You beauty consultant can guide your through the range of colours available and the shades that best suit you.

How does it work?

Using specialised instruments, it is possible to place colour into the deeper layers of the skin known as the dermis.  The outer layer of the skin, known as the epidermis is always shedding and renewing itself and so the applied colour will be visible through the outer layer of thin skin covering. Because the colour goes into both the outer and inner layer, the final result is more defined and will appear darker. You will find that during the healing process, the top layer will flake off.  Depending on the environment, skin type and colours used, the length of time between top-ups will vary but typically, you can expect the semi-permanent make-up colour to require topping up every one to three years.  Your beauty salon will normally provide a service for topping up semi-permanent make-up.

Safety Considerations

  • It obviously important to make sure that the beauty salon used for the treatment have professional staff who have been technically trained in the application of semi-permanent make-up.
  • There are no chemicals used in the process for semi-permanent make-up application
  • Allergy testing is carried out prior to the application.
  • Strict hygiene is applied for the procedure with sterilisation of equipment and individual sterile cartridges for every client.

Will it hurt?

Most people experience mild discomfort, particularly for lip colour procedures - generally the sensation is one of mild tingling. The procedure is generally quick and therefore any discomfort is usually short lived. Topical anaesthetics have been developed especially for permanent make up for eye-liner, eyebrows and lip colour procedures. The application of creams and gels ensure you experience minimal discomfort when applied to the area around thirty minutes before the procedure.
